This is just a regular custard with a nice, crunchy sugar topping. It's the sugar topping that makes this dessert so yummy (although you don't really "burn" the sugar. Eww).
Ingredients
2 cups whipping cream (or 1 pint)
1/2 cup sugar
4 egg yolks
1 tsp vanilla
12 T sugar
The Preparation
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
- In a small saucepan, heat the cream on low until bubbles form around the sides. Do not let it boil.
- Combine the yolks with the 1/2 cup of sugar.
- Slowly add the cream to the egg and sugar mixture. Still until well combined.
- Stir in the vanilla.
- Divide the mixture into six custard cups.
- Place the cups into a baking pan. Add enough water to the bottom of the pan so that it comes halfway up the custard dishes.
- Bake for 45 minutes or until set (the top may be slightly browned).
- Remove the cups from the baking pan and place in the refrigerator. Chill the cups for an hour.
- Sprinkle the top of each with 2 tablespoons of sugar.
- Preheat the oven to broil.
- Place the cups back in the baking pan.
- Add 2/3 of the amount of water used during the original baking. Add about two trays of ice cubes to the water.
- Place the pan under the broiler (about 5 inches from the heat - not too close!).
- Broil until the sugar melts and turns a golden color. Watch closely - it takes just a second to go from yummy to scorched!
- Chill at least an hour before serving.
