The Fernsehturm is the old TV tower in East Berlin. The communists were very proud of this structure because it's the tallest building in Berlin (and the East side had it) and it also proved that the East side had technology. The ball part was constructed on the ground and then hoisted into position. It wasn't until the ball was fully in place that they noticed, to their horror, that a cross forms when the sunlight hits it. Berliners named the crucifix "The Pope's Revenge."
